What equipment is needed for LFP cathode material manufacturing?

Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode manufacturing consists of two major stages: high-temperature synthesis (calcination), and post-synthesis dry powder processing. The full plant also includes raw material handling, impurity control, quality testing, safety & utility systems. Below is the complete equipment list, organized by process sequence.

1. Raw material batching & pre-mixing system

This stage prepares the precursors: iron source, lithium source, phosphorus source, carbon source and dopants.

  • Raw material silos (moisture-proof, dust-tight)
  • Loss-in-weight feeding systems for precise proportional dosing
  • High-speed wet mixer / kneader (for slurry mixing of precursors)
  • Sand mill (wet bead mill for precursor fine dispersion, optional)
  • Spray dryer: converts mixed slurry into spherical precursor powder before calcination

2. Calcination / sintering equipment (core synthesis section)

LFP forms its crystal structure during high-temperature roasting under inert atmosphere.

  • Roller hearth kiln (most widely used for mass LFP production)
  • Pusher kiln / rotary kiln (for alternative production routes)
  • Nitrogen generation & supply system (N₂ inert protection, prevents oxidation)
  • Kiln temperature control PLC, atmosphere monitoring, exhaust gas treatment
  • Kiln cooling section: controlled slow cooling to avoid crystal damage

3. Post-calcination dry processing line (the section covered on lfp-mill.com)

Calcined LFP clinker forms soft agglomerates. This step de-agglomerates, controls PSD and removes metal impurities.

  1. Pre-treatment
    • Crusher / coarse disintegrator: break large sintered chunks
    • Vibrating sieve: remove oversized hard blocks
    • Magnetic separator (pre-magnet): remove ferromagnetic impurities
  2. Grinding & classification host (choose one main route)
  3. Auxiliary powder handling for grinding circuit
    • Loss-in-weight screw feeder
    • Negative-pressure air circuit: cyclone collector, pulse dust collector, induced draft fan
    • Secondary magnetic separator after grinding
    • Buffer silos and ceramic-lined powder conveying pipelines
    • Compressed air system (only required for jet mill lines: air compressor, freeze dryer, precision filter, air tank)

4. Finishing, packaging and material conveying

  • Finished powder storage silos (anti-static, low-humidity design)
  • Automatic powder packing machine with nitrogen purging
  • Pneumatic conveying system (closed, ceramic-lined transfer pipes)
  • Metal detector for final impurity inspection

5. Laboratory & quality control testing equipment

For batch quality verification before delivery to battery factories:

  • Laser particle size analyzer (PSD: D50, D97)
  • Tap density tester
  • BET specific surface area analyzer
  • ICP elemental analyzer: test metal impurities (Fe, Cu, Cr, Ni etc.)
  • Carbon content tester
  • Moisture analyzer
  • Powder rheology test equipment
  • XRD (X-ray diffractometer): check crystal phase purity

6. Utility, safety and environmental protection systems

  • Nitrogen generator / liquid nitrogen storage tank
  • Chiller & cooling water system
  • Explosion protection system: spark detection, explosion venting, static grounding network
  • Waste gas treatment system for kiln exhaust
  • Dust collection systems for all powder transfer points
  • Central PLC & SCADA control system for full-line monitoring and data traceability

Two typical production route comparison

  1. Wet precursor + spray drying + roller kiln calcination + dry de-agglomeration (mainstream commercial route)
Uses spray dryer + roller kiln + JCSM air classifier mill. High throughput, stable particle morphology, lower operating cost for GWh-scale cathode plants.
  2. Alternative route: wet precursor + calcination + JFJM jet mill
Preferred when ultra-low metal impurity is the top priority, with smaller capacity and higher energy consumption.

LFP cathode manufacturing equipment covers raw material mixing, spray drying, high-temperature calcination, post-calcination dry grinding/classification, impurity removal, powder storage, automatic packaging and QC lab instruments. The dry grinding-classification system (JCSM or JFJM) defines the final powder PSD, tap density and impurity level, which directly influence battery cell performance.
