LFP powder is fine, cohesive, easy to absorb moisture, prone to static buildup and sensitive to metal contamination. Automated conveying and packaging systems must adopt fully enclosed, negative-pressure or inert-protected designs, with ceramic-lined wetted parts, static elimination and impurity prevention. The whole workflow connects finished powder from the grinding-classification system to silo storage, automatic batching and sealed packaging.
1. Process flow of automated conveying & packaging
Finished powder outlet of cyclone → buffer silo → automatic pneumatic conveying system → finished product silo → loss-in-weight discharging → automatic powder packing machine → nitrogen purging & sealing → bag labeling → metal detection → finished product warehouse
2. Automated powder conveying system
Pneumatic conveying is the mainstream choice for LFP, divided into dilute phase negative pressure conveying and dense phase positive pressure conveying.
Negative pressure dilute-phase pneumatic conveying (most common after grinding line)
- Powered by induced draft fan, the entire pipeline runs under negative pressure. Powder leakage is avoided even at flange joints.
- All powder contact sections: pipeline, elbows, diverter valves use ceramic lining to prevent abrasion and iron contamination.
- Equipped with static grounding cables on all pipes and valves to release static electricity generated by high-speed powder flow.
- Spark detection and temperature monitoring sensors are installed along long pipelines for dust explosion protection.
Dense-phase positive pressure conveying (for long-distance transfer to finished silos)
- Low conveying speed, less pipe wear, lower particle collision. It protects LFP particle morphology and tap density better than dilute phase.
- Nitrogen can be used as carrier gas instead of air, reducing moisture absorption and oxidation risk for high-grade LFP.
- Suitable for transferring large quantities of powder between silos across the plant.
Key auxiliary automation components for conveying
- Automatic diverter valves: PLC-controlled, switch powder flow to different finished silos for batch separation.
- Level sensors (radar / capacitance): High / low level interlock. Automatically start or stop feeding to prevent silo overflow or empty run.
- Silos for powder buffering and storage
- Anti-static silo wall, insulated and dehumidified; maintain low humidity inside.
- Fluidization bottom with low-pressure air or vibration device to solve arching and bridging of fine LFP powder.
- Bin activator / broken-arch system prevents material hang-up, which is a common problem for ultra-fine LFP.
- Secondary magnetic separator: Installed at silo inlet, to catch trace ferromagnetic impurities before packaging.
3. Automated packaging system
LFP adopts automatic valve bag packaging or big-bag (FIBC) packaging, depending on shipment form. The whole packaging zone is sealed and dehumidified.
Core equipment
- Loss-in-weight discharging feeder
Precisely control discharging mass, closed-loop weight feedback. It automatically fine-tunes feed rate to hit target bag weight, reducing overweight/underweight rejects. - Automatic packing machine
- Valve bag packer for 25 kg small bags; FIBC filling station for 500–1000 kg bulk big bags.
- Built-in dust extraction port to capture fugitive powder during bag filling.
- Nitrogen purging module
Purge air inside bags with dry nitrogen before sealing. Reduces residual oxygen and moisture inside the bag, protecting carbon-coated LFP during storage and transportation. - Automatic sealing and heat sealing station
Continuous sealing after nitrogen filling; fully automatic without manual bag opening. - Online checkweigher
Automatically recheck bag weight. Non-conforming bags will be automatically rejected. - Metal detector
Final inspection for metal foreign bodies after packaging. Critical gate before warehouse entry. - Automatic labeling system
Print and stick batch QR code, production date, PSD, tap density, lot number. Realize full batch traceability linked to the grinding line PLC data.
4. Automation control & interlock logic
All conveying and packaging equipment connects to the central PLC/SCADA system:
- Silo high/low level triggers automatic start/stop of upstream conveying.
- If metal detector alarms, the system automatically stops discharging and isolates the defective batch.
- Temperature, humidity, oxygen concentration inside silos and packaging booth are monitored in real time.
- All operating data, weight records, alarm logs are saved for battery customer quality audit.
- Safety interlock: high static alarm, over-temperature, dust concentration high alarm will trigger nitrogen inerting or equipment shutdown.
5. Critical design considerations for LFP
- Anti-contamination: All wetted parts ceramic lining; avoid bare metal contact.
- Anti-bridging: Fine LFP tends to arch in silos. Vibration or air fluidization is required. Do not use strong mechanical agitation that may damage particle morphology and tap density.
- Moisture control: Maintain low relative humidity in the packaging room (<40% RH). LFP absorbs water quickly and will degrade battery performance.
- Dust explosion & static protection: Full grounding network, explosion venting, spark detection, oxygen monitoring. Nitrogen inerting is optional for high safety requirements.
- Protect powder properties: Avoid excessive high-speed conveying which may cause secondary agglomeration or particle breakage and reduce tap density. Dense-phase conveying is preferred for long-distance transfer.
6. Typical configuration selection
- Small & pilot line: Semi-automatic 25kg valve bag packing, manual bag placement, automatic weighing & nitrogen purge.
- Large-scale GWh factory: Fully automatic dense-phase conveying + automatic FIBC big-bag filling line, unmanned packaging booth, automatic palletizing robot after bag sealing.
Automated LFP powder conveying and packaging uses enclosed pneumatic conveying (negative pressure or dense phase) to transfer powder from grinding line buffer silos to finished silos. Level sensors, diverter valves and bin activators solve powder bridging. The automatic packaging station includes loss-in-weight dosing, nitrogen purging, sealing, check weighing, metal detection and QR labeling. All equipment is interlocked by PLC, with static elimination, dehumidification and anti-contamination design to preserve LFP powder quality and realize unmanned continuous production.
