How to design a complete LFP dry processing production line

Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) dry processing mainly targets de-agglomeration of calcined sintered LFP clinker, controlling particle size distribution (PSD), tap density, metal impurity and batch consistency. A full dry production line is not just a single grinding machine; it is an integrated system including pre-treatment, feeding, grinding-classification, powder collection, conveying, iron removal, online monitoring, inert gas/explosion protection, PLC control and dust treatment.

1. Define core product specifications first (the starting point of line design)

Before selecting equipment, lock the battery-grade powder indicators, which determine the whole process route and equipment model:

  • Target PSD: D50, D97, maximum oversized particle limit (typical power LFP: D50=2–5 μm, strict D97 control)
  • Tap density, specific surface area (BET)
  • Metal impurity limits: Fe, Cu, Cr, Ni (critical for battery safety)
  • Production capacity: kg/h or t/h, annual output, continuous operation time (24h continuous or batch operation)
  • Powder characteristics: carbon coating condition, moisture, hardness, agglomeration strength

Two mainstream dry grinding routes for LFP:

  1. JCSM air classifier mill route: High capacity, low energy consumption, preferred for large-scale mass production.
  2. JFJM fluidized bed jet mill route: Ultra-low metal contamination, for high-end battery grades, relatively lower throughput and higher air consumption.

Spiral jet mill is only recommended for small R&D batches, not for large LFP production lines, due to fast liner wear.

2. Full process flow of LFP dry production line

Raw material silo → Magnetic separation & sieving → Loss-in-weight feeding → Grinding & classification unit → Powder collection → Fine powder buffer silo → Post magnetic separation → Conveying to finished product silo → Packing station
Auxiliary subsystems: negative pressure air circuit, compressed air system, dust removal, online particle size monitoring, inert gas protection, PLC central control.

Step 2.1 Pre-treatment section

Raw calcined LFP often contains hard agglomerates, foreign debris and iron impurities.

  • Raw material silo with fluidization and low moisture protection;
  • Pre-magnetic separator: remove ferromagnetic foreign substances before grinding, reduce ceramic liner and rotor wear;
  • Vibratory sieve: screen out oversized hard blocks > 1–3 mm to protect the main mill.
    Purpose: Prevent hard impurities from entering the grinding chamber, reduce metal contamination risk and extend equipment service life.

Step 2.2 Precision feeding section

Adopt loss-in-weight screw feeder instead of volumetric feeder.

  • Variable frequency control, stable feeding rate;
  • Closed structure to avoid dust leakage and moisture absorption;
  • Interlock signal with main mill and classifier: automatically reduce feed rate when PSD deviates or overload occurs.
    Stable feeding is the foundation for consistent particle size and tap density of LFP.

Step 2.3 Core grinding-classification host

Choose one main machine according to capacity and quality requirements:

  1. JCSM air classifier mill solution
    • Integrated grinding rotor + top turbine classifier; all powder contact surfaces ceramic lined.
    • Grind and classify in one chamber; coarse agglomerates automatically circulate back for re-deagglomeration.
    • Suitable for 0.5–10 t/h continuous production, low power consumption per ton.
  2. JFJM fluidized bed jet mill solution
    • Requires high-pressure compressed air system (compressor, freeze dryer, air storage tank, precision filter).
    • Built-in turbine classifier, excellent low metal contamination performance.
    • Suitable for high purity LFP, medium-small capacity lines.

Key design requirement: all powder contact parts ceramic lining (alumina / zirconia / SiC) to block iron contamination.

Step 2.4 Powder collection and air circuit

The whole line runs under negative pressure closed loop:

  1. Cyclone separator: primary collection of most qualified fine LFP powder;
  2. Pulse bag dust collector: capture ultra-fine dust, prevent powder loss and air pollution;
  3. Induced draft fan: provide stable negative pressure airflow for material transport.

Negative pressure design ensures no outward powder leakage, and can be upgraded to nitrogen closed circulation for oxygen-sensitive or explosion-proof requirements.

Step 2.5 Post-processing and impurity control after collection

  • Secondary magnetic separator after cyclone outlet: second metal impurity removal;
  • Buffer silo with slow stirring to prevent re-agglomeration of fine LFP powder;
  • Online sampling port for manual inspection.

Step 2.6 Finished product storage and automatic packing

  • Finished powder silo with dust-proof, moisture-proof and anti-static design;
  • Automatic powder packing machine with nitrogen filling;
  • Batch barcode marking for full traceability of each lot.

3. Auxiliary system design (easy to overlook but critical for LFP)

  1. Compressed air system (only for jet mill lines)
    Air compressor, air dryer, filter, air tank. Must provide clean, dry oil-free compressed air at stable 0.6–0.8 MPa.
  2. Explosion protection & static elimination
    LFP powder belongs to combustible dust. Design requirements:

    • Full grounding of all equipment and pipelines to eliminate static electricity;
    • Explosion vent, spark detection, nitrogen inert protection as required by local safety codes;
    • Avoid sharp pipeline elbows to reduce powder scouring and static accumulation.
  3. Online quality monitoring system
    Online particle size analyzer installed on the pipeline after cyclone. Real-time D50 / D97 data feeds back to PLC, automatically adjusting classifier speed or feed rate to maintain stable PSD.
  4. Central PLC control system
    One HMI workstation to monitor all units: feed rate, rotor speed, classifier frequency, airflow, temperature, pressure, motor current. Save all batch data for quality traceability required by battery customers.

4. Key balance factors for line design

  1. Capacity vs fineness: Finer LFP (D50 <2 μm) reduces throughput and increases energy consumption; reserve 20–30% margin for peak load.
  2. Tap density protection: Do not over-grind primary crystals. Avoid excessive rotor speed or too high jet pressure.
  3. Wear management: Ceramic liners, ceramic nozzles, ceramic elbows. Design easy disassembly structure for regular maintenance.
  4. Material moisture control: LFP easily absorbs moisture. Keep whole line low humidity environment; avoid moisture-induced re-agglomeration.

5. Typical line selection recommendation

  • Gigawatt-level large LFP factory: JCSM air classifier mill dry line, high throughput, low operating cost.
  • High-end / specialty LFP, small to medium production: JFJM fluidized bed jet mill dry line, ultra-low metal impurity.
  • Lab & pilot test: Small JFJM or small JCSM test system for process verification before full line investment.

A complete LFP dry processing production line is designed around target powder specifications and output scale. It integrates pre-screening & magnetic separation, precision feeding, ceramic-lined grinding-classification host, negative-pressure powder collection, secondary impurity removal, dust removal, online quality monitoring and safety protection. The core goal is to de-agglomerate sintered LFP while preserving tap density, controlling PSD and minimizing metal foreign impurities.
