The JCSM air classifier mill is a vertical, integrated dry grinding and classification system specially engineered for battery active materials such as lithium iron phosphate (LFP), NCM, graphite and other cathode/anode powders. It combines impact de-agglomeration and built-in dynamic turbine classification in one main unit, designed to break soft sintered agglomerates while preserving primary particle morphology and tap density.
1. Core structure of JCSM for battery-grade powder
The complete system includes:
- Loss-in-weight precision screw feeder
- Vertical grinding chamber with ceramic-lined stator and high-speed grinding rotor
- Independent variable-frequency classifier wheel mounted on the upper section
- Closed negative-pressure air circuit, cyclone collector, pulse dust collector and main induced draft fan
- PLC intelligent control with online particle size feedback
For lithium battery materials, all powder contact surfaces are fully ceramic lined to eliminate iron and metal contamination, which is critical to avoid internal short-circuit risks in finished cells.
2. Step-by-step working sequence
Step 1: Controlled feeding
Raw sintered battery material is continuously and stably fed into the bottom grinding chamber via a loss-in-weight screw feeder. Feeding speed is adjustable by frequency conversion to match rotor speed, classifier speed and airflow, preventing overload and unstable PSD.
Step 2: Impact de-agglomeration in grinding chamber
The high-speed grinding rotor rotates and delivers impact, shear and particle collision forces. For sintered LFP, the target is not to smash the LFP crystal grains, but to separate soft agglomerates formed during calcination.
The ceramic lining protects powder from metal pickup. The split-shaft, separate bearing seat design dissipates grinding heat and avoids local overheating, preventing thermal degradation of heat-sensitive battery materials.
Step 3: Dynamic air classification at the top chamber
Upstream airflow carries the dispersed powder upward into the classification zone. The high-speed turbine classifier wheel creates strong centrifugal force.
- Fine qualified particles: Air drag force overcomes centrifugal force; particles pass through gaps of the classifier wheel and flow to the collection section.
- Oversized coarse particles: Greater mass makes centrifugal force dominant. Coarse powder is thrown outward, falls back to the grinding chamber and undergoes re-deagglomeration.
This internal closed-loop circulation stops over-grinding. Fine powder is removed immediately once it meets specification, so primary particles are not excessively damaged.
Step 4: Powder collection
On-spec fine powder flows with airflow into cyclone separators for primary collection. Ultra-fine residual dust is captured by pulse bag filters. The negative-pressure closed system prevents powder leakage, material loss and external contamination.
Step 5: Real-time parameter tuning
The JCSM uses independent drives for grinding rotor and classifier wheel. Operators adjust classifier wheel RPM and system airflow to change the cut point, directly controlling D50 and D97 without screen replacement. Online particle size monitoring can feed data back to the PLC to automatically adjust feed rate and classifier speed for batch-to-batch consistency.
3. Key advantages for battery materials (LFP as typical example)
- Preserve tap density: Gentle de-agglomeration breaks agglomerates instead of crushing primary crystals, maintaining high tap density required for cathode electrode coating.
- Low metal contamination: Full ceramic lining of grinding chamber, rotor and classifier contact surfaces meets battery-grade impurity standards.
- High energy efficiency: Direct mechanical energy transfer, no heavy compressed-air consumption compared with jet mills. Higher hourly throughput for large-scale LFP production.
- Narrow PSD and strict top-size control: The turbine classifier sharply limits oversized residues, improving battery consistency and safety.
- Closed negative pressure: Low dust emission and easy to add nitrogen inert protection for oxidizable or sensitive battery powders.
4. Operational limits for battery materials
- It is optimized for soft agglomerate de-agglomeration of sintered cathode materials. If primary particles need extreme ultrafine size below D50=1.5 μm, jet mill is often selected instead.
- Hard impurities such as unreacted hard aggregates will increase liner and rotor wear; pre-magnetic separation is recommended before feeding.
- The balance between feed rate, rotor speed and classifier speed must be calibrated to avoid over-grinding that reduces tap density.
JCSM air classifier mill performs dry, continuous “grind-classify-regrind” closed-loop processing. It uses mechanical impact to disperse battery material agglomerates and an integrated turbine classifier to separate qualified fine powder. With ceramic anti-contamination design and independent frequency control, it is a high-capacity, energy-saving solution for mass production of LFP and other lithium battery cathode powders.
