Can PU lining reduce contamination in powder conveying?

PU (polyurethane) lining can reduce metal‑wear contamination in powder conveying sections, but it is not a universal solution and cannot replace ceramic lining for high‑wear zones in LFP dry‑processing lines. It has clear applicable boundaries for LFP cathode powder.

How PU lining works for contamination control

PU is a soft, elastic non‑metallic polymer material. When abrasive LFP powder flows through pipelines:

  1. It eliminates direct friction and impact between powder and bare steel pipe wall, avoiding iron debris generated by metal erosion.
  2. Good elasticity absorbs particle impact energy, lowers abrasion rate of the substrate pipe.
  3. No Fe / Cr / Ni metallic wear particles are released, so it helps mitigate metal‑pick‑up risk in conveying circuits.

Key limitations for LFP powder

  1. Poor high‑velocity abrasion resistance at elbows and bifurcations
Elbows, tee‑junctions, cyclone inlets suffer high‑angle particle impingement. Under long‑term scouring by hard sintered LFP powder, PU will gradually wear, pit and peel. Worn PU fragments become polymer foreign‑body contaminants mixed into LFP powder, harming battery performance.

Therefore PU lining shall NOT be used for elbows, cyclones, high‑impact transition sections of LFP lines. These high‑wear positions require high‑purity alumina ceramic lining.

  1. Temperature restriction
PU has limited heat resistance. If process air temperature rises, PU may soften, age or shed fine particles. LFP dry‑processing temperature must stay well below PU thermal limit.
  2. Risk of static accumulation
PU is insulating. In pneumatic conveying of ultrafine LFP powder, static electricity can build‑up, bringing dust‑explosion risk for fine powder systems. Anti‑static grade PU must be selected and reliable static‑earthing design implemented. Ordinary PU is not acceptable.
  3. Cannot be used inside grinding chamber or classifier
In grinding and classification zones, particle velocity and impact energy are extremely high. PU will degrade rapidly. Only ceramic lining is qualified for mill and turbo classifier wetted‑parts.

Recommended application scope for PU lining in LFP conveying

✅ Suitable: Straight conveying pipes with low impingement angle, moderate flow velocity, low particle impact. PU lining is cost‑effective here to prevent steel pipe wear‑derived metal contamination.

❌ Not suitable:

  • Elbows, tees, cyclones, hopper transition sections (high‑impact zones)
  • Inside grinding chamber, pre‑breaking chamber, turbo classifier housing
  • Locations with elevated process temperature

Practical combined configuration for LFP powder conveying

  1. High‑wear hot‑spots (elbows, bifurcations, cyclone inner wall): 99%+ high‑purity alumina ceramic lining.
  2. Straight‑run low‑impact pipelines: anti‑static PU lining is acceptable as an economical alternative.
  3. Avoid thin bonded PU linings prone to delamination; select cast‑integrated PU lining structures.
  4. Periodically inspect PU surface for pitting, abrasion and peeling. Replace lining before fragments flake into product stream.

PU lining can reduce metal contamination in low‑impact straight conveying pipes for LFP, by replacing bare steel contact. However it fails at high‑impact elbows and cyclones, and may introduce polymer foreign contaminants when worn. For battery‑grade LFP processing, PU is a supplementary material for partial conveying sections rather than an overall replacement for ceramic lining. High‑wear positions must still adopt high‑purity alumina ceramic to guarantee powder purity.
